The Hintere Dollert waste dump in the area of Gaggenau-Oberweier was sealed by a capillary barrier system with an optimized root ground on an area of about 20,000 m2. The sealing system includes a system for the control of water volume changes (TAUPE system) in the lower area of the root ground (above the capillary barrier) and in a control layer (below the capillary barrier). It controls tightness of the sealing system.
The parameter determining the water budget is (non-)saturated hydraulic conductivity. This soil property is directly linked with the water concentration. The measurement system allows for measuring hydraulic conductivity at any time over the entire area. From these data, the locally resolved water budget of dump surface sealings can be determined and flow through the surface sealing system can be quantified.
